Is my passport valid for travel to Europe?

Accepted Answer

You'll need to make sure your passport is: issued less than 10 years ago; has at least 3 months validity from the date you intend to leave Europe; is not damaged or defaced; has sufficient blank visa pages (if you need a visa); and that if you've applied for a visa, you don't use the same photo as in your passport if your passport is more than 6 months old

Do British passport holders need a passport to travel to the EU?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and from 1 January 2021 the requirements will become stricter after the Brexit Transition Period ends. You'll need to make sure you have at least three months validity on your passport from the date your intend to leave the EU. The UK Government actually recommends 6 months so there's no issue.

Do British passport holders need a visa to travel to the EU?

Accepted Answer

No, and after the end of the Brexit Transition Period on 1 January 2021 it's highly unlikely British passport holders will need a visa to travel to Europe for periods of up to 90 days. However, it's highly likely British passport holders will need to apply for a National D visa from the country they intend to reside in if they intend to stay there for more than 90 days.

How many blank visa pages do I need in my passport?

If you're travelling to the EU and need a visa, you need two completely blank visa pages. Other countries may request just one blank visa page, such as the UK. It's always best to check the guidance published by the embassy/ consulate of the country you're travelling to for more details.

Can I travel if my passport is damaged?

Accepted Answer

It depends. Minor damage and general wear and tear is usually ok, but if your passport has part of a page missing or is smudged due to water damage, you might not be able to use it. This is such a subjective area that the best guidance is if your passport is damaged or defaced it's usually better to apply for a new one before you travel than risk being stopped at the border and turned away.
